DEIS - Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools

St. Vincent's is a DEIS school

Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools (DEIS), the Action Plan for Educational Inclusion, was launched in 2005 and remains the Department of Education and Skills policy instrument to address educational disadvantage. The Action Plan focuses on addressing and prioritising the educational needs of children and disadvantaged communities, from pre-school through second level education (3 – 18 years).

The value of DEIS to our school and our students is enormous in terms of additional investment in infrastructure, resources, special initiatives and staffing. Our action plan in delivering educational excellence for our students is about building on the success stories we have had in educational provision and in tackling educational disadvantage. The DEIS initiatives in our school enables us to do what is right for our students and is grounded in the belief that:

  • every child and young person deserves an equal chance to access, participate in and benefit from education
  • each person should have the opportunity to reach his/her full potential for personal, social and economic reasons
  • education is a critical factor in promoting social inclusion and economic development

The eight DEIS areas comprise:

  1. Attendance
  2. Retention
  3. Literacy
  4. Numeracy
  5. Attainment
  6. Progression
  7. Partnership with parents
  8. Partnership with others

We have a DEIS Committee for each one of the eight DEIS areas. We hold regular meetings to review initiatives in place to promote the eight DEIS areas and we also continually seek new initiatives/measures to better our school community.
